Last night Steve Campbell (6-19) and his South Alabama Jaguars into Hattiesburg, MS and got their first win of the new year, along with their first road win in 3 years! They were lead by new QB Desmond Trotter, who took over for Cepheus Johnson last year and kept that starting role. Trotter threw the ball 29 times going 16-29 with 299 yards 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Chance Lovertich also came in, throwing completing 2/3 passes for 64 yards and 1 touchdown.
This was on the 4 year anniversary of USA's 21-20 win over then ranked 18th Mississippi State.
Steve Campbell could be on the hot seat after 2 underwhelming seasons to start his coaching career. This is a big win that could potentially help him keep a job with the Jags.
This was also a big game because it was the second game of the CFB season which has been hard to start due to the covid 19 pandemic.
Now for Southern Miss this is a bad loss, they were 7-6 in 19-20 and retained starting QB Jack Abraham who had an impressive 19-20 campaign completing 67.9% of his 405 passes for 3496 yards for 19 touchdowns. Now HC Jay Hopson (28-23) has nothing to worry about, as he has made 3 bowl games (1-2) and it's a long season. Hopefully RB Frank Gore Jr, son of NFL legend Frank Gore, will have a better game rushing the ball 12 times for only 27 yards.v
